Winter Recipe

Crème Brulee French Toast

This recipe is sure to garner rave reviews! Carriage House Inn guests always “ooohhh” and “aaaahhh” over this recipe. Rarely is a bite left! A perfect dish to serve family and friends on Christmas morning or a New Year’s Day Brunch, this recipe is extremely easy to prepare and can be made ahead of time.

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons corn syrup
  • 1 loaf Italian or French bread
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups half & half
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Confectioner’s sugar, to sprinkle on top

In a small heavy saucepan melt butter with brown sugar and corn syrup over moderate heat, stirring until smooth. Pour into a 13” x 9” x 2” glass casserole dish. Cut bread into 2-inch thick slices and arrange slices in one layer in the baking dish, squeezing them to fit.  In a bowl, whisk together half & half, eggs, vanilla and salt until well combined. Pour evenly over bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight. The next day, heat oven to 350 degrees.  Place in oven and bake until firm and lightly golden on top, approximately 40 minutes. Cut into 6 servings and turn over on the plate with the brulee on top. Sprinkle with Confectioner’s sugar.  Serve with sausages and fresh fruit.
