Ferries to the Islands

Traditionally, there have been four locations to catch a ferry to either Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard.  Nearest to the Carriage House Inn is the Freedom Ferry to Nantucket, leaving from nearby Harwich, only 15 minutes from the Inn.  Pricewise, a bit more costly, but the location is convenient.  The downfall is it is inconvenient for our guests.  Two ferries per day, the first interferes with breakfast for our guests, and the second cuts short their time in Nantucket.

Further away in Hyannis, two ferries leave from Hyannis to Nantucket –  the HyLine and Steamship Authority.  Both have very frequent sailings during the summer.

Traditionally, traveling to Martha’s Vineyard means boarding the Island Queen in Falmouth or the Steamship Authority out of Woods Hole.  The Falmouth ferry is about an hour and fifteen minutes away.  The Woods Hole ferry is about an hour and a half away.

The big news this year is that the HyLine out of Hyannis has scrapped its slow line ferries to both islands.  The new high speed ferries will zip you to either island giving you more time to enjoy these whaling towns.  Our recommendation is to take the HyLine fast speed to either island from Hyannis.
